Do I need a server or a backend for live chat on a static site?
No. The script tag loads the chat in an iframe served by Mewdesk, and your team answers from the Mewdesk dashboard. A static host is all your site needs.
Install guide
If you can edit the HTML, you can add Mewdesk: one script tag before </body>, on any host, with no server of your own.

Where it goes
The snippet is the same on every platform: one script tag just before the closing body tag. These steps show where that is on Plain HTML.
Add your website under Websites, using the domain you are installing on, and copy the snippet from its Embed code page. It has your site ID filled in; the one shown here uses a placeholder.
Find the closing </body> tag near the end of the file and paste the snippet on the line before it.
If your pages share a footer file or a layout (Jekyll, Hugo, Eleventy, Astro, a PHP include), paste it there once and every page gets it.
Deploy as usual, by FTP, git push or your host's upload. Reload a page and the chat bubble is there.
Good to know
What you get
The widget lives in its own iframe, so it looks and works the same on Plain HTML as everywhere else.
That is the whole install. No npm package, no build step, no plugin to keep updated.
Visitors see your answer the moment you send it, without refreshing. Your team replies from one inbox.
When nobody is online, visitors leave their email and a message, and the chat picks up where it left off.
No IP addresses, no fingerprinting, no third-party scripts. A name, an optional email and the conversation.
FAQ
Questions people ask before adding live chat to a Plain HTML site. For everything else, the general FAQ has the rest.
No. The script tag loads the chat in an iframe served by Mewdesk, and your team answers from the Mewdesk dashboard. A static host is all your site needs.
On every page that should show the chat bubble. If your site builds pages from a shared layout or footer file, paste it there once.
At the end of the body the page's own content loads first and the loader can place the chat right away. The tag is async either way, so it never blocks rendering.
Paste the snippet, answer your first visitor. The first 21 days are on us, with no card needed.
